Roads

The objective of Longford Town Council in regard to roads is to develop and maintain a network of public roads to cater for the cater for the ever increasing volumes of modern traffic and to provide the necessary infrastructure to support social and economic development, with due regard for the safety and amenity of all road users.

“Public Road” means a road over which a public right of way exists and the responsibility for the maintenance of which lies with a road authority.

The current road network in the Longford Urban area is made up as follows;

National Roads (N5 & N63) 4.7 km
Regional Roads (R198 & R393 5.7 km
Local Roads 25.5km

The National Roads in Longford make up many of the main streets in the Town. Main Street, Ballymahon St, Dublin St, New St, Richmond St, Killashee St, Market Sq and the Ballinalee Road are all part of the national road network. Longford County Council and the NRA are jointly responsible for the development and maintenance of the national roads in Longford Town.

Similarly the regional roads in Longford Town are the responsibility of Longford County Council. The regional roads in Longford Town are Lower Main Street and the Battery Road (R198), the Dublin road and the Ardagh road (R393).

Longford Town council is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Urban road network which includes all other public roads in the urban area. As part of this responsibility Longford Town Council provides the following services and programmes,

Public Lighting – The provision and maintenance of public lighting is carried out by Longford Town council. Longford Town Council also provides the Christmas lighting on the town centre streets over the Christmas period.

Road Restoration – Longford Town Council carries out restoration work to a number of roads in the Urban Area on the basis of a multi- annual road works programme.

Road Maintenance – Included in the road maintenance programme are street sweeping, weedkilling, salting of roads in winter, maintenance of road surface and maintenance of road markings.

Car Parking – Longford Town Council recognises the increasing need for car parking around the town centre area. As a result of this Longford Town Council has provided a temporary car park on CIE grounds at Earl Street and is in the process of providing further off street car parks at Main Street, Ballymahon Street and Lower Main Street.
